Marl is a calcareous clay-based soil often found in some of the most prestigious wine growing regions of the world, including Pomerol in Bordeaux and Piedmont in Italy. This clay on limestone structure is also prevalent on the Kuhlman Estate vineyards, as well as some of our vineyards in the Texas High Plains. The 2017 Marl, a new Kuhlman Cellars wine, is a proprietary red blend of grapes grown in a similar clay and limestone soil. The expression of the terroir gives the wine energetic plum and cassis aromas. Graphite and lingering tannins in the mouth promise a potential for aging but can also be enjoyed now with tenderloin meats.
